30 Day Music Challenge Day 18: Favourite lyrics

Choosing my favourite lyrics from what must be about ten to fifteen thousand songs I own, let alone the thousands more I have heard, is pretty much an impossible task.

So instead I’m just going to include the lyrics to a hilarious song by Flight Of The Conchords, the New Zealand duo who have become hugely successful the world over due to two television series being made based on their songs. This particular one is one of my absolute favourites. I’ll copy out the lyrics then include the clip for it (you have to watch the clip to appreciate just how funny it is).

The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room) by Flight Of The Conchords

Looking at the room, I can tell that you.
Are the most beautiful girl in the…room.
(In the whole wide room).
And when you’re on the street, depending on the street.
I bet you are definitely in the top three.
Good lookin’ girls on the street.
(Depending on the streets).
And when I saw you at my mate’s place.
I thought…what, is she, doing…at my mate’s place.
How did he get a hottie like that to a party like this?
Good one, Dave.
(Ooh, you’re a legend, Dave).

I asked Dave if he’s going to move on you.
He’s not sure.
I said “Dave, do you mind if I do?”
He says he doesn’t mind.
But I can tell he kind of minds.
But I’m going to do it anyway.

I see you standing all alone by the stereo.
I dim the lights down to very low, here we go
You’re so beautiful.
You could be a waitress.
You’re so beautiful.
You could be a air hostess in the 60s.
You’re so beautiful.
You could be a part-time model.
But then I seal the deal, I do my moves.
I do my dance moves.

Lets travel through, just me and you.
As other dudes around you on the dance floor.
I draw you near, lets get out of here.
Lets get in a cab. I’ll buy you a kabob.
I can’t believe. I’m sharing a kabob.
With the most beautiful girl I have ever seen with a kabob.
Oh, why don’t we leave?
Lets go to my house.
We can feel each other up on the couch.
Oh no, I don’t mind taking it slow.

Cause you’re so beautiful…
Like a tree. Or a high class prostitute.
You’re so beautiful.
You could be a part time model.
But you’d probably still have to keep your normal job.
A part time model.
Spend part of your time modeling.
And part of your time next to me.

My place is usually a bit tidier than this.

What are your favourite lyrics to a song?

  2. That was hilarious, I have never heard of those guys. I have to say that I’m a lyrics person, lots of the ones by Dr Hook are great there’s one that they do and the music is really smoochy and the words are beyond weird http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_9cLidPdtY but actually any meaningful words catch me. I hate that one about New York with the Broooookly bri-i-i-i-i-idge in but if you hear the version with the rapper it’s is transformed

    • They’re very funny and much loved over this side of the world, those guys. ๐Ÿ™‚
The lyrics to that song you posted are really bizarre, but kind of entertaining. Oddly, they remind me of “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” off The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • Yeah same sort of weird vibe. I do love Dr Hook and most of their songs have really great lyrics, many of them are stories, of course Sylvia’s Mother is one, and there is a super one called Drinking Wine Alone which had a lovely atmosphere, as I say I am very much a words person.

        • I do like songs that tell stories. Mark Knopfler is great like that – his songs (more so in solo career than Dire Straits) have always told stories, and there’s something about the way he does it that draws me in. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hmmm I’m trying to remember the lyrics from that song – I’m sure I have that one (I only have about half a dozen of Dylan’s albums though). I will have to look it up, I’m curious now ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Hahahahaha! I love Flight of the Conchords. That show cracks me up. I especially love the episode in the first series where they go to Dave’s house and he’s claiming that he lives with “housemates” to sound cool, but really it’s just his parents. Arj Barker is too funny.

    • Hahahaha yeah Dave is a great character. It’s funny because his character isn’t that different to Arj in real life, but yeah I agree he’s a very funny man. Murray is hilarious too. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I love this album! Flight of the Conchords are hilarious.
Now to get serious – my favourite line in a song at the moment is from Florence and the Machine’s song ‘Never Let Me Go.’ The line “I’m not giving up, I’m just giving in” always gives me chills. Don’t know why.

  5. That was quite amusing! I’m not sure some of those lines would actually work on a pretty girl like that, but it was fun to watch him try! lol

As for my favourite lyrics, like you I have so many running through my head it’s hard to pick just one, although there is one really memorable song – an old British song – called the Bricklayer’s Song. I first heard it sung by a local group called Simpson’s Folly who often perform at the Lower Fort Garry Historical Site. I actually found another group who sings it and this site has the lyrics as well. Basically, it’s the story of a man who’s telling the story of why he’ll not be at work, today.
