So, the internet is a pretty big place, isn’t it? (And the Captain Obvious award goes to…)
Anyway, despite my previous statement, in all its profundity, there are a few websites in particular I love to visit on a regular basis. Here are a few of them, including why I think they are so awesome.
(If you’re looking for blogs I would recommend, check out all my posts in the “Awards” category on the right hand side – a lot of the blogs I have nominated in those various posts are definitely high up on my “you should see this” scale!)
NaNoWriMo: NaNoWriMo is an awesome world-wide event/phenomenon, in which hundreds of thousands of people bunker down over the month of November to attempt to write a 50 000 word novel in 30 days. It is a lot of fun, and really inspiring to be a part of – I have finished it 3 years in a row now, and plan to return bigger and better for 2012! Check out the website for more details.
Cyanide & Happiness: I love webcomics, and spend far too long reading them. This is one of my all time favourites, written by four young guys, and updated daily. It has been going for several years now, has thousands of old comics archived, and is one of the most popular webcomics on the internet. It is also very vulgar and rude, and not for the light-hearted or easily-offended, but personally, I think it is fantastic.
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal: Despite the name, this is also updated daily, and features the nerdy comedic talents of Zach Weiner, the webcomics generally dealing with a range of topics from science, philosophy, religion, sexism…pretty much anything, really. The drawings are fantastic, and this is also one of the most read webcomics on the internet, so if you haven’t seen this before, check it out now!
Hyperbole and a Half: This hilarious blog by Allie Brosh also features illustrations, usually drawn badly on purpose in Paint, so as to add to the humour. In particular I would recommend reading “God of Cake” and “Party”, but they are all hilarious. This site is one of the funniest places on the internet, without a doubt.
Buttersafe: This is a silly but kind of cute webcomic that always makes me laugh. It updates every Tuesday and Thursday.
Goodreads: Do you read a lot? If so, you should probably join this website. It’s like a social network that focuses entirely on books and reading habits, and you can rate and review books on it, compare with friends, that kind of thing. A great site for bookworms!
Invisible Bread: This is another webcomic, which updates a couple of times a week. It never fails to make me burst out into laughter, and the author also writes several other webcomics (the links to which can be found on this site).
I could probably think of a lot more, but this will do for now – I’ll add more with the passing of time. If you have any recommendations, please feel free to pass them on!
Awesome tips! And btw if you haven’t already seen it: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2496#comic
I laughed so hard when I saw it and kinda thought of you hehe x) Except the whole ‘looking like an old lady’ part 🙂
Hahahha, yeah I saw that one the other day, and laughed pretty hard. I’m kind of considering printing it off and just sticking it randomly in the English staffroom at work… heheheehe.
And it’s okay, you don’t have to lie…you think I’m an old lady….*sniff*
Bigging it up for goodreads! Best place to be! 🙂
Hahaha, yeah, Goodreads is pretty addictive. It’s good for constantly reminding me when I fall behind my personal reading challenge (such as right now), but it’s also nice to link up with other avid readers, such as yourself, and to find suggestions and ideas for what to read next. 🙂
I also love Cyanide and Happiness! Sounds like you have a twisted sense of humor–in that case, check out TheOatmeal.com if you haven’t already. It has comics for everything from how to use a semi-colon to why your cat is plotting to kill you! LOLs galore! 🙂
Hahaha, I LOVE The Oatmeal, that site is so funny. I wish I could use his grammar comics in my classrooms, but they’re a bit vulgar really. But what a hilarious site, and the guy who writes it is so down to earth and so different to what you’d expect. 😀
so many new blogs, so little time!
I know what you mean, it does feel like that…. 🙂
I agree with the GoodReads, other I’ll try.. I have fonding for webcomics 😀
Awesome to hear! 🙂
So we’ve been hanging out at NaNo, C&H and GR all this time and never said hello? Is outrage! 😉
Hahaha I saw the NaNo thingy on your page when I was skimming through before – you’ve got one more win than I do (I only discovered it in 2009)! What’s your name on GR, I’ll go and add you on there? And definitely I’ll add you on NaNo when November comes around – it’s always good to meet other NaNoers, especially ones who can kick butt at it! 😛
Also yes, C&H is amazing. Yes you have a good point, it is an outrage we never said hello! 😉
There you go – see you around!
