The Kreativ Blogger and Versatile Blogger awards

Last night I got a lovely little surprise in one of my comments – I had been nominated for The Kreativ Blogger and The Versatile Blogger awards. It is completely flattering and unexpected, and frankly it means the world to me to know that other bloggers enjoy what I have to say – it certainly motivates me to keep on blogging! Read on for the details, and some random trivia about me.

I was nominated by the lovely Roshni from Roshrulez’s WeblogΒ – an awesome blog full of thought provoking ideas that I think you should all take the time to check out! Thank you Roshni, it means a lot, and congratulations on being nominated yourself, of course!Β

So, there are rules with these two awards, which have seemingly become blurred into one set of rules over time, which is fine by me. Basically, I need to tell all of you ten random (and hopefully unknown for most of you) facts about myself, and then nominate some fellow bloggers for the awards, who then go on and do the same.

Without further ado, 10 random facts about me:

  1. I have epilepsy. I was diagnosed when I was 17 (despite suffering from it unknowingly for years), and when I had my big seizure which led to the diagnosis, I collapsed in my bathroom, hitting the ground with such force I kicked the tiles off the bathroom wall, and caused all the blood vessels in my face to burst, covering me in thousands of tiny little red dots. When I saw myself in the mirror later that day in the hospital, I burst into laughter.
  2. I had to learn to speak twice. When I was 2 years old, I had fits which nearly killed me, and also nearly gave me brain damage (yes, yes, go on, make the “or did they…?” jokes…I just did myself). I recovered almost perfectly, except bizarrely I had forgotten how to talk, and had to start from scratch, which resulted in several lisps that took me several years to lose. Now of course I speak confidently and probably too much.
  3. My favourite piece of classical music is the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I find it amazing that a single piano can be just as powerful as his most heavily orchestrated symphonies.
  4. I once laughed so hard while watching Monty Python that I actually lost my voice. I was babysitting for a family friend, and decided to watch the first Monty Python film,Β And Now For Something Completely Different for the first time in my life. I had previously only seen the other movies, and not a drop of the television series (which I have since watched multiple times), and so I was roaring with laughter at this film. Ten minutes into it, I went to talk to the kids I was babysitting, but nothing came out of my mouth when I tried to talk. Which in itself was quite funny, I suppose.
  5. I have never broken a bone, despite my clumsiness. However, when I was about 13 years old, I injured my middle finger on my left hand falling backwards onto it while playing basketball. It resulted in that finger swelling up to twice its normal size, and changing colour, and I couldn’t bend it properly for a couple of years. But to a 13 year old boy, not being able to pull down my middle finger was kind of funny, and I used it to my advantage. “But I was just waving hello…”
  6. The first story I remember writing was when I was about 8 or 9 years old. It was 20 pages long, took me most of the school year to write, and was mostly about robots and outer space, ending not with someone waking from a dream, but with the universe coming to an abrupt end. My lovely teacher “published” it for me, typing it up and binding it together. This probably decided my fate as a writer (and perhaps a teacher) there and then.
  7. I like the taste of absinthe. I know it sounds odd, but I think it tastes okay, really. But people always think I’m really weird for this one.
  8. I like rain. I think Billy Connolly said it best when he said “There’s no such thing as bad weather, it’s just a matter of being appropriately dressed.”
  9. I spent the first 4 and a half years of my life living in England, mostly in Ipswich, Suffolk. I have spent the last 21 and a bit years living in Australia, on the Central Coast an hour north of Sydney. I feel just as English as I do Australian though, even after all these years.
  10. I can raise my left eyebrow, and both eyebrows at the same time, but not my right eyebrow on its own. What is that about?

Now, I would like to nominate the following blogs for these awards as well (this was really hard to pick, so even if you didn’t make this list, I probably still love your blog):

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the random facts about me, and hope you all check out these awesome blogs I have listed, all of which amaze me in different ways.

  1. Loosing your voice while laughing has to be one of life’s treasures. I’m not sure I have ever accomplished this before, but I am now looking for the joke to get me there. Monthy Python is probably a good place to start.

I really enjoyed your 10 facts – its funny, but after reading your posts these things seem to fit. Sure, some of them were surprising, but yet they seemed to fit the collection of words you have on your blog. It just shows that your “voice” is very much made of you! Thank you for sharing.

Now, I am sitting here at my desk trying to work and I just can’t hide the grin that you caused by nominating me for these awards. I am truly thankful and appreciative. My blog is certainly important to me, and the 3-6 folks who visit it on a random and perhaps guilt-driven basis, but to even be considered for an award, any award, is awesome! Thank you so much! Grin still here.

    • Yeah, I have never lost my voice from laughing before or since that moment, but it was pretty surreal when it happened. I think Monty Python is a very good place to start.
Glad you enjoyed the facts, and that’s interesting how you say that they tend to fit my voice, so to speak. I had never thought about that before! But thanks, I guess that’s a good thing hahaha.
And not a problem about nominating you, you’ve got a great blog and a great way of expressing ideas, and I certainly look forward to continuing to read it! πŸ™‚

  2. Congratulations on your awards! You certainly deserve them. I’ve enjoyed reading you blogs every morning and found the facts about you very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I will have to go check out the bloggers you recommended. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you! πŸ™‚ I will have to slow the blogs down a little now I think, but I will probably still blog 4 to 5 times a week – I am completely addicted to it. I just need to think of things to write about :S

  3. I love when people get these awards because it is SO interesting to read the tidbits that they decide to share about themselves. I would have never known you had epilepsy, or that you had to learn to speak twice. What an amazing feat, and a testament to your strength even at a young age.

And who likes the taste of Absinthe? Every time I smell it I think of drunken college nights, haha. I can’t ever think I may like it.

PS. No wonder you’re a writer/blogger if you wrote you first short story at 8 years old. It’s all so fascinating.

And thank you for sending this award my way – that’s lovely.

    • Yeah, I have found it interesting reading other people’s random facts too. It’s funny, because it took me a long time to realise there was anything special about some of these things that happened to me, especially in my younger years. I had several close calls in my first few years, actually, so I feel quite lucky to still be here, hahahaha.
Absinthe isn’t that bad! Kind of… πŸ˜› I’ve consumed worse drinks, at least..
It’s funny the whole thing about me writing that story when I was so young – for me it kind of helped re-inspire me a few years ago. I found that story, and a whole bunch of other stories from my early teens, and it suddenly clicked, that writing is this thing that has kind of linked up all the various stages of my life, that it really is part of who I am as a person. Which is probably why I attack my creative writing with such ferocity now πŸ˜›
And not a problem for sending the award your way – you have a fantastic blog! And it’s so colourful too! πŸ˜€

  4. Thank you so much for passing the award on to me! I’m so glad you were awarded it because your posts are always interesting and insightful. I love your ten random facts. It’s nice to know a little more about the person behind the blog!

    • Not a problem! As soon as I got the award and knew I had to pass it on, your blog was one of the first that came to mind – it’s a great blog, and likewise your posts are always thought provoking and well expressed!
And glad you liked my facts. It’s always fun to reveal things like that too, and yeah, like you say, connect to my audience a bit more I suppose! πŸ™‚

    • My email seems to be working fine? I got all of yours and replied to them…? I was going to say maybe your internet is being funny except you’re on here so it’s not that. Maybe just try again in like 5 or 10 minutes? Hopefully it’ll just fix itself :S

    • Hahahaha, thank you! That’s very kind of you! πŸ™‚ As I said, I might do 10 more random facts about myself a bit further down the track πŸ˜›
But thank you again. And I loved your post πŸ™‚
